Patrick T. Barone has been a top-rated, nationally-known Michigan lawyer for almost three decades. Few practicing criminal defense lawyer have received more honors and accolades. The five attorneys at the Barone Defense Firm have close to 90 years of total legal experience.

Mr. Barone launched his legal career in 1988 when he served as a Judicial Law Clerk to the Honorable Richard D. Kuhn of the Oakland County Circuit Court. During his three-year tenor Mr. Barone began honing his trial skills while learning from the veteran Judge and many of the State’s top trial lawyers who appeared in his courtroom. In 1992, he opened his own law practice where he began his concentration in criminal law. Since 1993 Mr. Barone has been admitted to practice Federal law before the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. In 2003 Mr. Barone became the principal and founding member of the Barone Defense Firm, headquartered in Birmingham, Michigan with offices also in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Since this time Mr. Barone has handled thousands of cases on behalf of citizens charged with many disparate crimes in the adult and juvenile courts throughout Michigan.

It is believed that Mr. Barone has defended more criminal law trials of DUI-DWI cases in Michigan than any other private practice lawyer. Winning your intoxicated driving case is the first best option, but where necessary, Mr. Barone will take the case up on appeal as far as necessary to obtain the best result. Past clients facing the nightmare of a driving under the influence, drug possession, or serious injury by vehicle or vehicular homicide accusations have no other option but to try every possible legal tactic to win.

In addition to his law practice, Mr. Barone currently serves as adjunct professor at the Western State University/Thomas M. Cooley Law School, has been on the faculty of the Michigan Trial Practice College and is a graduate of the Gerry Spence Trial Lawyer’s College. He has also written several chapters for the West/Aspator Books “Inside the Minds” series on various aspects of criminal law, discovery and trial practice; and he is a regularly contributing author for various legal periodicals and has written 100s of articles that have appeared in some of the Nation’s premier Law Journals.

Mr. Barone has received much peer recognition and numerous prestigious awards, including an “AV” (highest) rating by the “Martindale-Hubbell Law Dictionary”, and since 2009 has been included in the highly selective “US News & World Report’s America’s Best Lawyers” while The Barone Defense Firm appears in their companion “America’s Best Law Firms.” He has been rated “Seriously Outstanding” by “Super Lawyers” and rated “Outstanding/10.0” by AVVO. Mr. Barone was further distinguished through an appointment to the advisory board for the Michigan edition of “Leading Lawyers Magazine.”

Additionally, in 2018 Mr. Barone became a “CP” when the American Board of Examiners Certified him as a Practitioner of Psychodrama, Sociometry and Group Psychotherapy. Soon thereafter he reached the next level of certification, that of a Practitioner Applicant for Trainer (PAT). Mr. Barone is the only Michigan lawyer so-certified by the American Board. He is currently a 2022 candidate to become Board Certified as a Trainer, Educator and Practitioner (TEP) of Psychodrama, Sociometry and Group Psychotherapy. Mr. Barone’s psychodrama and sociometry training and certification informs his courtroom jury trial practice and has contributed to his teaching of law and trial skills. He also utilizes this training in his business consulting practice which includes leadership development and the exploration and improvement of group dynamics and performance in the workplace.

The youngest of 6 children, he grew up in Oakland County, Michigan. He has been happily married for over 23 years and is the father of two girls, both of whom are now young adults.
